Julian and Sam Earl invited us into their newly completed Granary Barn, Devon. The couple have travelled and lived around the world, and have filled their unique home with character and warmth. They have chosen this idyllic quiet spot in rural Devon as home, and have used UK Hardwood flooring and window sills throughout the barn.

Walking into their home you are always greeted first by the Earls’ family dog Jasper, wagging his tail and trotting along on the extra wide plank Oak flooring we’ve supplied. Wall colours and lighting compliment the Devon Oak flooring from the hallway, with the continuation of the flooring leading you through further. Sympathetic restoration of original beams lead you from the hall down into the warm heart of this home, the kitchen.

Our Character Oak flooring has been used throughout the Devon property, and as you enter the open plan kitchen/sitting room space, you notice the vast expansive views stretching far into the distance, enhanced by the length of the wide planks stretching across the room. Board lengths of 4.5m have been used to span across the kitchen width. The view outside the window is complimented by the use of extra wide window sills supplied by us here at UK Hardwoods.

A warm fireplace as the focal point, this is where the Earl’s chose to relax and unwind after a long day. They have used a blue from The Little Greene Paint Company in the sitting room to distinguish between this area to sit and relax and the kitchen, but keeping the wide plank flooring consistent to create an inclusive family space.

Julian and Sam laid and treated the floor themselves, and took particular time and pride in creating as little waste as possible through their project. Offcuts from the flooring were used for filling spaces under the kitchen cabinets. One particular knot of wood was used to whittle an acorn, which subsequently became the bathroom light pull.

In the bathroom, they have designed a natural relaxed space to unwind, using white walls and our locally sourced Devon Oak flooring to sit back and relax with. This house is more than just a home for Julian and Sam, it is place they built and created, and their character can be seen from ceiling to floor.

Character Oak Flooring

UK Hardwoods have taken a ‘hands on’ on approach with the project and have provided advice and expertise with the flooring and other challenges. The provision of wide oak timber, up to 18”, for the window sills created eye catching features and a complement to the external views.
