We were honoured to welcome a team from the Forestry Commission to UK Hardwoods on Wednesday 19th June, as part of their development day exploring best practices in British timber production and sustainable forestry.
Who are the Forestry Commission?
For those less familiar, the Forestry Commission is a non-ministerial government department responsible for managing publicly owned forests in England, as well as regulating both public and private forestry. Their role is central to ensuring the long-term health, sustainability, and productivity of our woodlands. They aspire to keep woods healthy and productive through woodland management.
Taking a Closer Look at our Glulam Structure
The group had spent the morning with Buckland Timber, and joined us in the afternoon for a closer look at our operations here in North Devon. Having spent the morning understanding their processes, there was a particular interest in our Larch glulam structure, which stands as a working example of what’s possible when traditional craftsmanship meets forward-thinking design between our companies. Constructed entirely from British-grown timber, the glulam frame reflects our ongoing commitment to local materials, full traceability, and sustainable methods.
Topics of The Day
We guided the team through our sawmill and workshops, sharing insights into our approach to solid wood flooring, large section timber, and the art of working with character-rich British hardwoods. The visit sparked valuable conversations about woodland supply chains, timber grading, and the future of homegrown forestry in construction.
Connecting the Industry
Of course, a key part of the welcome committee was Sugar the dog, who took great pride in showing our guests around – and charming them in the process!
